Acorn Buildings primarily use British oak from properly managed sources. Here are some facts about the timber of the Oak tree and what makes it such a good material for building.
The word 'Oak' refers to several hundred different, yet related, species of tree spread across the Northern Hemisphere.
Oak is a hardwood and grows slowly. This gives it a very tight grain, making the wood very strong and perfect for countless applications from construction of
furniture, flooring to traditional oak framed buildings. Oak was the material of choice for ships until the advent of modern metallurgy allowed steel hulls to be built.
As it seasons, oak contracts. This is down to the moisture evaporating. This is one of the reasons Acorn Buildings use traditional carpentry methods. These time honoured, highly effective methods work so well because the joints will harden and strengthen as the wood dries and matures. This makes the joints incredibly tough.
As it has such attractive grain, oak has been used for interior
paneling for centuries as well as being used for the structural frame of buildings. Oak is still
highly desirable due to it's appearance today and can be found being used in veneers for furniture and flooring.
Oak has been the material of choice for wine
barrels for centuries as the wood itself contributes to the taste
and bouquet of the wine. Vineyards across the world use woods from all
over Europe and America to create different tastes. Oak is
also used in the production of smoked foods.
